Dr Ismail Makda is a dedicated Ophthalmic Surgeon with a special interest in Vitreoretinal Surgery. With a wealth of experience in his field, Dr Ismail is deeply committed to enhancing patient care through collaboration with multidisciplinary teams and support staff.

His journey in Ophthalmology began with a strong dedication to providing high-quality care. Dr Makda has developed his clinical skills at various esteemed institutions, currently serving at East Rand Eye Associates in Kempton Park and Vision Clinic in Pretoria where he performs vitreoretinal surgery with Dr Dyason and Dr Gani respectfully. His previous experience includes roles as an ophthalmology registrar at the University of the Witwatersrand and as a medical officer at St. John Eye Hospital and Leratong Hospital.

Dr Makda’s contributions to the field have not gone unnoticed; he has received several prestigious awards, including the Elie Dehan Ophthalmology Registrar of the Year Prize and a Certificate of Merit for his Fellowship in Ophthalmology.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr Makda is passionate about education and community service. He shares his knowledge through presentations at major ophthalmology conferences like OSSA (Ophthalmological Society of South Africa) and SAGS (South African Glaucoma Society). His commitment to community outreach is evident in his participation in surgical camps, where he performs cataract surgery at locations such as Tintswalo Hospital in Mpumalanga via the Tshemba Foundation.

Dr Makda also holds leadership roles, including being a member of the executive committee for the Young Ophthalmologists section of the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa. His educational credentials include a Master of Medicine in Ophthalmology from the University of the Witwatersrand, a Fellowship in Ophthalmology from the College of Medicine of South Africa, and additional diplomas in both Ophthalmology and Obstetrics.

Residing in Johannesburg with his family, Dr Makda is fluent in English and Afrikaans. He continues to pursue professional development through programmes like the Orbis & Alcon International Phaco Development Fellowship as well as participating in the African Glaucoma Journal Club.
